Graduation 2024

Graduation 2024

An amazing 20 years has flown past since George Brown approached five like-minded individuals in Forney to help him create the Forney Education Foundation. Known originally as the Forney Education Leadership Foundation, the symbol was a key representing how to achieve the future: continuing education post high school. As the years have unfolded for the Foundation, the Board shortened the name and developed a mission statement that says we are to provide opportunities for excellence in education, promote innovation in teaching, and partner with the community to enhance the quality of education for all students. The vision for the Foundation is stated as, “Lighting the way for teaching and learning at Forney ISD.” And that is why the symbol for FEF is now a torch that contains a stylized “F” as the flame. The logo was designed by Kody Kasper, a 2010 graduate of Forney HS and a 2014 graduate of Southern Arkansas University with a degree in Graphic Design. She worked with the committee that was charged with the task, listened to their thoughts about what the Foundation meant to them, distilled all of it, and created the logo in use now. Her design was very well received as it is easily recognized, innovative, and functional, much in the same way that the teacher-requested grants are also functional and innovative.

What is the “Silver Tsunami”?

The United States is changing, and observant individuals may notice the nation is skewing a little older than it has in recent years. Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate roughly 56 million Americans had reached age 65 by 2020, which marked a nearly 39 percent increase since 2010. The increase in the population that has reached traditional retirement age has been dubbed a “silver tsunami,” and that increase could stretch government resources thin in the decades to come. In fact, a 2018 report from the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy noted that the federal government could face considerable challenges as more of its budget is allocated to age entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare. That problem may not prove unique to the United States, as the United Nations estimates that the elderly population in Europe is expected to account for around 30 percent of all residents by 2050. Though entitlement programs differ from country to country, finding ways to successfully manage the silver tsunami could be imperative to various nations’ financial stability in the decades to come.

Did I Ever Tell You…

I’m a person besieged by kooky things. If it’s odd beyond reason, it probably happened to me, happened due to me, or affected me ancestrally. Often, I wonder if these experiences are common in everyone’s lives, and it is my only-child mentality that has led me to believe I’m special in this world of silly absurdities. Judging by the horrific or highly entertained looks on the faces of the folks listening to Dina’s True Tales, it’s just my life. Those perplexing looks seem to be on the rise these days. I was once told, by a dear friend, that a conversation with me is like talking to a time traveler who spent their childhood in the civil war and their teenage years in the groovy seventies. My southern monologues are generally on point. My Texas accent is accenting. Yet, I feel honored to be the daughter of the handsome dude who was born in the roaring twenties and the lovely lady, nearly twenty years his junior, who hunted squirrels with her dad and thought Buddy Holly was the end all be all. Somewhere in the middle lies a great story. Let’s get into a few, shall we?
