The Most Popular Recreational Activities

Summer is a season for recreation. Warm weather beckons people outdoors every day and during every season, but a quick glance outside your living room window in June, July and August will illustrate just how much people cherish any chance to spend time in nature when the mercury rises. So how are people spending their time outdoors? According to a recent report from the Outdoor Foundation that studied participation in various sports and activities, the most popular outdoor activity in the United States is running. The Outdoor Foundation report indicated that more than 61 million U.S. residents did some recreational running in 2019. To put that in perspective, 61 million people represents roughly 19 percent of the American population ages six and up. Fishing was the second most popular outdoor recreational activity among adults in the U.S., attracting more than 50 million participants. Outdoor recreation also is popular in Canada, where winter-dominant sports like skiing, snowboarding and hockey aren’t the only ways to enjoy the great outdoors. For example, the Trans Canada Trail, a recreational trail that connects every province and territory in Canada, attracts cyclists, joggers and hikers throughout the warm weather seasons.

Accessibility is an important variable to consider as homeowners try to determine if they can convert their attics into a livable space.

3 Factors to Consider Before Converting an Attic

At the onset of the CO‑VID 19 pandemic, many homeowners suddenly found themselves in need of more usable square footage in their homes. Required to work from home due to so‑cial distancing recommen‑dations, millions of work‑ing professionals suddenly found themselves setting up shop at kitchen tables or is‑lands, in alcoves, garages, or even walk-in closets. Those makeshift offices were never supposed to be permanent, but as companies loosen workplace policies and em‑brace full remote or hybrid working arrangements, pro‑fessionals are seeking more permanent home office solu‑tions.

Lawn Burweed

Well last year this pesky lawn weed was my number one horticulture related call for two months. This weed that has infected a vast majority of yards in our area. Lawn burrweed, car‑pet burrweed or spur weed (Soliva spp.), a cool season annual introduced from South America, has become a nuisance on golf courses, athletic fields, parks and lawns throughout much of Texas and the Southwest. The weed becomes a real nuisance when the seed ma‑tures in the spring because the sharply pointed spines on the seed can easily pierce the skin. Burweed becomes a deterrent to the use of athletic fields, parks and playgrounds in the spring when the seed mature. On golf courses, burweed in‑vades even the most closely mowed putting greens as well as fairways, tees and roughs.
