In the United States, talking about mental health issues and mental illness remains taboo and can often lead to a negative stigma for the person needing help. Adolescents are much more prone to internalize what others think about them, which leads many teenagers to keep mental illness concerns to themselves. The month of May is dedicated to mental health awareness, making now an ideal time to discuss mental health concerns in teens. The isolation faced during the COVID pandemic exacerbated the mental health problem. According to a 2021 CDC study, 37% of adolescents felt regular or constant anxiety or depression during the pandemic. There are common factors that negatively impact a juvenile’s mental health, resources available, and signs to look for to help a teenager successfully navigate their mental health issues.

Each year, the Mesquite Police Department honors its employees through a presentation of awards for superior public service to the Mesquite community. On April 17, top awards were presented to Jeremy Epperson as Officer of the Year, and Esmeralda Montante as Civilian of the Year.
A review of the 2022 2023 Forney High School Band season shows a group of students who excelled in their craft and brought home multiple honors to their school and community. In the Fall, the Marching Band received a top ten ranking in the State UIL Marching Contest. The Percussion Ensemble was given the honor of playing a showcase concert at the prestigious Percussive Arts Society Convention in Indianapolis. At the final competition of the season, the Wind Ensemble, walked away with top honors at the Peak Music Festival in Richardson.

The amazing month of May continues to wow and produce hoped-for results. The blackberry vines in our woods have already produced a bountiful crop so far, and the promise of more to ripen is evident when you lift the branches and look below them. Mother Nature is capable of producing surprise results just like many of the students in Forney ISD are also capable of achieving great results.
Kaufman County Commissioner, Precinct 3, Terry Barber was among 17 Texas county judges and commissioners who completed the first phase of the Commissioners Court Leadership Academy in Austin hosted by the V.G. Young Institute of County Government.
Forney ISD has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for the 9th year in a row. This acknowledgement is for being amongst schools and districts of innovation and for developing a strong presence for music education on campus and within the community.
Crandall ISD has selected the lone finalist for its superintendent position and the district didn’t have to look very far.
Enrollment in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Managed Lands Deer Program (MLDP) is now open for the 2023–24 hunting season. Open enrollment for the MLDP Conservation Option runs April 2 through June 15; the Harvest Option opens May 1 and ends Sept. 1.
